Value Creation Story
From “Communicating” Value Creation to “Co-Creating” It

At ICMG Group, we position integrated reports and value creation reports not as mere information disclosure, but as a co-creative process of value creation.
By articulating a distinctive Value Creation Story grounded in intellectual capital, we engage a wide range of stakeholders—including shareholders, customers, partners, and employees—fostering shared understanding and resonance, and connecting these insights to the next cycle of value creation.
In many organizations, communication initiatives such as integrated reporting have become formulaic, often reduced to one-way dissemination, with the original purpose of disclosure increasingly obscured.
In response, we work together with our clients to create the stories that serve as catalysts for transformation.
ICMG Group draws on the philosophy and methodologies of intellectual capital management developed in Sweden and across the Nordic region, refining and evolving them to align with the managerial context and strategic challenges of Japanese companies.

The Significance of Communication Through Integrated Reporting

Why Do We Disclose?

In recent years, many companies have begun issuing integrated reports.

As illustrated in the framework, organizations are expected to refine and leverage their capital through value creation, generating both non-financial and financial outcomes. Ultimately, this process should lead to the realization of corporate purpose—solving social challenges and creating social value.
However, in many organizations, communication activities such as integrated reporting have become little more than one-way dissemination, and the fundamental question—why disclose?—is often lost.
For example:
  • Reports are produced out of routine, treated as an annual “event.”
  • Activities are handled by a single department, disconnected from management and business-level value creation.
  • Essential initiatives are not disclosed because tangible results, such as business transformation or new ventures, have yet to materialize.
  • Value and the value-creation process are not conveyed as a coherent story to customers or employees, resulting in little meaningful dialogue.
  • Editorial work proceeds with disclosure as the end goal, without a clear link to value creation.
In response to these challenges, we work with our clients to co-create the “story” that becomes the starting point for transformation.
ICMG Group has inherited the philosophy and methodologies of intellectual capital management developed in Sweden and has evolved them to fit the management context of Japanese companies. We have also participated in the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) study groups on intellectual capital and in the development of the Intellectual Asset Management Guidelines. For more than 20 years, we have supported corporate transformation and communication practices based on intellectual capital.
ICMG Group’s stakeholder communication support corresponds to the Disclose phase of the 4D Cycle—connecting the activities of Discover, Design, and Deliver to society.
The storytellers we support are not limited to top management. They include business units, project teams, and individuals on the front lines.
Everyone is a protagonist in value creation, and putting that value into words becomes the starting point for the next transformation.

Challenges Our Clients Face

CHALLENGE

There is a gap in conveying the need for change and our ability to realize it.

CHALLENGE

There is a disconnect between our individual initiatives, short-term results, and long-term value creation.

OPPORTUNITY

Our greatest opportunity lies in codifying the tacit value created by our people into unique capital, establishing a formidable competitive advantage that others cannot replicate.

How did we help?

What we propose as an integrated report is not merely the production of a disclosure document. Rather, it is a process of uncovering the intellectual capital inherent within an organization and redefining it as a coherent structure for value creation.
By organizing tacit knowledge—such as the insights and experience of people, organizational culture, and the underlying ways of thinking that support the business—from an objective, third-party perspective, we connect these elements to management strategy and shape them into a compelling narrative.
Through this process, integrated reporting fulfills its essential role: aligning perspectives between management and the frontline, cultivating intellectual capital, and creating a foundation for meaningful dialogue with society.
We believe this is where the true value of integrated reporting lies—and where our role as a committed partner truly matters.
Every year, we have produced an integrated report by merging financial and non-financial information. Over time, however, we began to feel a sense of misalignment—the process had become an end in itself, a "check-the-box" exercise to satisfy frameworks, rather than a true reflection of our essence. We struggled to find clear answers when asking ourselves: "Are we truly demonstrating our purpose, our social value, and our path to future growth?" It was then that ICMG Group posed two sharp, pivotal questions: "Is it enough to simply list the number of employees for your human capital?" and "Is the intrinsic value of your company truly reaching your customers?" These questions were a wake-up call. We realized that human capital is far more than a head count, and our value extends far beyond our physical products. We learned that true sustainability is achieved only when we define what we must refine and integrate that specific value-creation process into the very core of our business. This experience redefined our understanding of the integrated report. It is not merely a disclosure document; it is a strategic tool to articulate our unique strengths and to ensure we are the company of choice in the global market.
